The project is still in brain-storming phase, so all information here is tentative and subject to drastic change.

The distinct theme of The Paladin Chronicles is to form a sort of allegory to spiritual warfare is a fantasy environment. Possibly the afterlife "before judgment."

Gameplay

As for now, the game is a 2D turn-based RPG with possible Multiplayer elements, such as networked/hotseat coop missions and duels. The game will have some old school FF RPG callbacks (duel style battles, etc).

One of the key points of the game is to have an open style of game play, not in the sense of side quests like so many RPGs, put in the progression of the main storyline. Certain events and elements will be static, but the idea is that the player can write their own story, through diplomatic choices, strategic decisions, outcomes of missions and possibly even random side events.

Character

The player can select a "Paladin" from one of four different legions. Each legion has different strengths, skill sets, attributes and histories.

Unlike traditional RPGs, attributes such as strength and intelligence are not leveled up, and players do not collect armor or weapons. Each Paladin is equipped with a set of armor which is upgraded through experience. This armor is tied to the Paladin and is never traded out or lost. Skills being tied in with levels of armor is a possibility. Customizable weapons are a strong possibility. Loot, such as health/mana potions, amulets and rings, experience and skill tomes, is a strong possibility.

Armor consists of:

  • Helmet

Primarily upgrades one's health stats.

  • Breast Plate

The main source of armor points

  • Belt

Mana and Magic power

  • Boots and Gauntlets

Speed and Agility

  • Weapon

Attack, obviously.

  • Shield

Deflection, along with some other stats.

Legions

Basic history of the land: There existed a peaceful kingdom, as always, ruled by light and flowing with magic. However, the people become proud in their power, and lusted for more. They became foolish and listened to the lies of the darkness and built a gateway to their world. Quickly they realized their mistake, but it was too late once the gate had been opened; The surge of darkness reacted violently with the magic of light, which was now fading, and tore the land asunder. The kingdom, once marked with grandeur and splendor became nothing more than ruins inhabited by demons, and it's proud people, no more than slaves serving their purpose.

It is your calling, as a Paladin, to rally the shattered forces of the Legions and push out the demonic oppressors seeking to enslave the entire land.

Legion of Ice

The first people to fight back against the demonic oppressors were the Northern People. The formed a strong alliance and began to push the demons and their spawn out of their mountains. The oldest and grandest of all legions, but in time. While they are still a forefront in the fight, and their lands are devoid of most enemies, in this they became a bit complacent and are no longer striving for the freedom of the land. (see Ephesus in Revelations). They have a medieval based theme.

Their Paladins are the most magic based of all, and possibly the most rounded. (can serve as priest)

Legion of Fire

The Legion of Ice has sent emissaries around the land to find other people to stand up and fight along side them. The first to answer (and capable of resisting) were the savage warlords from the Southern Deserts. Alone, the demons feared their land, but once they unified, they struck fear in the very heart of evil. They attack without reservation, laying waste to any in their path. They're ferociousness became legendary, but it was short lived. They spread too thin, and they fell apart. Never truly defeated in battle, they merely stopped fighting. Their lands were overridden and covered in darkness, but there are still a few who fight back. (see Laodicia and Smyrna). They have a Greek/Mediterranean theme.

Their Paladins are offensive based, with the highest attack power of all. (nuke)

Legion of Earth

When the darkness became creeping in the forests of the east, the Armies of Ice and Fire aided the Forest Tribes in their fight. In time, they grew strong and the enemy could never wage a successful open campaign against them. But lately, they found a way: to infect the people. Deep in the catacombs under the forest, they slowly began infecting the people within. The Legion of Earth were fairly simple people, and while their strength could easily repel any forward assault, they were not quite so prepared at an attack from inside. (see Pergamos and Thyratia) They have a Germanic/Viking/Barbarian theme.

Their Paladins have the highest constitution and armor rating. (tank)

Legion of Wind

The youngest tribe to rise were the cliff dwellers from the west. They worked closely with the Legion of Fire, who initially freed their people from slavery. Many of them at first would join the Fire ranks, but soon, they began to from their own Legion after the Legion of Fire began dieing away. Without the Fire Paladin's protection, they became a prime target of the demonic hordes, still sore over their recent loss of slave labor. But the people are determined and fight back to protect their people. (see Smyrna and Philadelphia) They have a Indian/Aztec theme.

Their Paladins are the lightest and quickest, they strike hard and most of all, fast. (rogue)
