Setting

Your basic story of high fantasy several thousands of years into the future. Set in an futuristic alternative world, tensions grow between races as a dark power begins to grow in the galaxy/solar system.

History

The Second Age, the age of swords and sorcery, ended after a cataclysmic battle, banishing the Daemon Legion from Time and Space. Unfortunately, this event drained all Mana from Terra, and the days of wizards were over. The union between the many races united to drive away the Legion was strained by the changed world and over time, forgotten. Each race went on with their own ways and seperated.

Mankind set themselves to rebuild their empire across the face of the world, starting from the ruins of their lands, adapting to a world without magic, but forged by machines and the sweat of their brow. The Elven kind left, flying to the stars with the dwindling magic of their own, in hopes to find more sources of Mana in other worlds. The Dwarven folk, followed by the gnomes, descended deep into the mantle, channeling the heat and pressure to power their new underground cities. The Merians, already an elusive race, swam back into their oceans, to their once great underwater cities. The nomadic, hordish orcs were driven through a gate to a faraway barren world and sentence for their alliance with the Legion, but spared from their sinister masters' fate due to a more slavish relationship.

The races soon grew to forget each other, save only in legend. After a several thousand years, a single emissary from the elven people changed everything. The elven ship was sent out after they detected a dark mana presence emanating from Terra. They were met by a Human civilization nearly as advanced as their own. A brotherhood was reformed and a search for the other races commenced, and were quickly met with success. This was just in time, for the dark mana occurrence was the result of a tear in the fabric of space-time, as the Daemon Legion was once again breaking back into our universe. With the aid of human and elven space technology, a successful emigration campaign saved billions of lives as Terra was consumed by the gate to the prison of the Daemons. The races soon colonized other planets at a safe distance, but the threat of the Daemon Legion was far from over.

Races

(can be added or removed from list, not all need to be playable)

Human Alliance

Well rounded, good armor, speed and fire.

Elven

Sleek, smaller, faster.

Dwarven

Slower, heavy on defense. Favors slower, heavier fire as well.

Gnomish Conglomerate

Small, low on armor, but good speed. Top maneuverability. good weapons.

Orcish Horde

Low on armor, but high on attack.

Alternatives

  • The second age can be built to fit to be the antediluvian world, and the story set in a more end-times world
  • The game world, rather than be galactic, can be set in a single solar system (ours or a made up one)<-YES
  • Remove Mana and Magic from history
  • Daemons can be replaced by Undead

Plot

Plot is event driven and set in an open world. As the story commence, areas open up to the player through jump gates, change in "faction" standing, etc.

When another stage in the plot opens, a player is made aware of it's happening and can choose to proceed to it. Some stages in plot would take a couple items/actions to take place before continuing, allowing a player to choose how to proceed with it (giving a better illusion of open gameplay without increasing size beyond a linear plot). A branch or two, can also be hinged on a player's decision, but still rejoin later to the main plot line (say, if a player chooses to help these the dwarves, he'll have one different missions, rather than if they aided the elves, but the result plot is mostly the same, other than, maybe better faction standing with dwarfs, more dwarven ships, etc.)

Story can be about a young pilot (of a chosen race) defending his planet (an independent outpost inhabited by all races, sans Daemons, of course) from a Daemon raid, the beginning of a Daemon campaign to control the system. Then has to set out to unite all the races to once again defeat the Daemons.

Game Mechanics

Open world play. Starting out, the player is limited to select locations, but through plot, eventually almost the entire map is opened.

Rather than have one persistent world, the map is separated into different areas, say, Earth, Mars, Asteroid base, etc) which can be traveled through by jump gates. Inside these areas can be points of action, say, a enemy fighter to engage, a base to visit for supplies, or different points for minigames to further plots, or other gameplay points like (examples):

  • Duel, when encountering single enemy ship(top down 360 combat between two ships)
  • Assault, when attacking/attacked by base/fleet/etc (top down scrolling shooter)
  • Turret (click 'n' shoot)
  • Various plot driven puzzles (DDR-clone, tetris, etc)
